A snowy Vermont weekend with siblings turned into so much more for M + R. R had quietly planned every detail of the surprise proposal — a snowshoe trek through the winter woods to the iconic Von Trapp Chapel in Stowe, with a little help from the siblings who played their parts perfectly. I tucked behind a tree (my signature move) and waited.
As the group arrived at the chapel, the siblings slipped inside, leaving M and R alone in the crisp mountain air. They rounded the building and stopped — perfectly centered, perfectly still — and R made the ask. The snow, the steeple, the silence. It was everything.
Back at the ski lodge, their closest friends were already waiting, glasses in hand, ready to celebrate. M had absolutely no idea any of it was coming. The look on their face said it all.
Did you know there's a chapel on the Von Trapp Property in Stowe, Vermont?
The “Von Trapp Chapel” in Stowe is the small stone chapel on the grounds of Trapp Family Lodge—and it’s one of the quietest, prettiest little corners of the property. Is an easy hike up the trail from the Cross Country Ski Center.
It’s officially the Trapp Family Chapel, built in 1950 as a memorial honoring soldiers lost in World War II. The chapel sits near the lodge and reflects the family’s deep Catholic faith as well as their Austrian roots. The resort’s own history timeline specifically notes: “1950 | Stone chapel built in honor of WWII soldiers.”
The von Trapp family (yes, the real family behind The Sound of Music) settled in Stowe after leaving Austria during World War II. They purchased Farm in 1942, eventually creating what is now the Trapp Family Lodge. The chapel became part of that original vision of creating a little piece of Austria in Vermont.
When you visit the chapel, it feels less like a tourist stop and more like a hidden pause button. Stone walls, quiet walk through the woods with a little forrest washing, and that slightly surreal feeling of realizing this is actually where the real von Trapps lived and you are walking the very same paths. Having been there a couple of time I can absolutely say, it’s one of the most peaceful spots on the property.
