Where to Have a Small Wedding in Burlington, Vermont

filed under:

I almost cried, watching a bride and her father squeeze down a narrow pathway. Not for the reason you might think. Because, we all missed it. The ceremony flow hadn't been properly planned. I won't let that happen to you.

After photographing dozens of intimate weddings throughout Burlington, I’ve learned that finding where to have a small wedding in Burlington, Vermont requires more than just picking a pretty space. You need venues that understand intimate celebrations, handle logistics gracefully, and give you flexibility to create something truly yours. Burlington, Vermont offers everything from romantic hotel patios to quirky breweries, but not all venues are created equal for small weddings. Let me walk you through a few of the ones that actually work.

When you're working with 20-50 guests instead of 150, you suddenly have access to unique spaces that larger weddings simply can't use.

Why Burlington Works for Small Weddings

Burlington gives you cozy Vermont charm without feeling isolated. The walkable downtown means guests can easily move between ceremony and reception venues. Plus, Lake Champlain and the surrounding mountains provide stunning backdrops that make every photo look like a postcard. When you’re working with 20-50 guests instead of 150, you suddenly have access to unique spaces that larger weddings simply can’t use. Private dining rooms, brewery event spaces, and hotel patios all become viable options.

Restaurant Venues with Private Event Spaces

Small restaurants in the greater Burlington area are often my favorite venues to work with BBCO works beautifully for cocktail party receptions. The space has character, the food is exceptional, and the intimate setting encourages real conversation between guests. I’ve seen couples do a private ceremony elsewhere, then host a relaxed reception here that feels more like a dinner party with their closest friends. Waterworks, Juniper, Queen City Brewing, and Frankie’s all have private event spaces perfect for intimate celebrations. Queen City Brewing offers that casual Vermont vibe that many couples love, while Juniper provides a more upscale atmosphere. Restaurant venues handle catering seamlessly, often have existing relationships with local vendors, and create a relaxed atmosphere where your guests can actually enjoy themselves instead of sitting through formal reception programs.

Romantic Hotel Wedding Venues

Hotel Vermont remains my top recommendation for romantic small weddings. Their Van Ness patio creates magic for intimate ceremonies, and their staff accommodates beautifully with indoor and outdoor options. I recently photographed a private ceremony on the Van Ness patio with a private dinner following. The next day, they had a cocktail party reception at BBCO with friends and family. Their wedding day was rainy, so it was wonderful to have day two to play in the sunshine.

Blind Tiger is one of the newest quirky inns gaining attention. For very small elopements under 10 people, The Lang House is a cozy inn on upper Main Street that provides intimate charm you simply can’t get at larger venues. Hotel venues solve multiple problems, guest accommodations, catering capabilities, and built-in backup plans for weather. When you’re planning a destination wedding in Vermont, that convenience factor becomes invaluable.

3 Hidden Gem Venues You Might Miss

When you stop fighting the rain and start working with it, magic happens. I’ve captured incredible reflection shots in puddles and dramatic silhouettes against stormy skies that couples treasure forever.

Echo Lake Center has an epic view for ceremonies, but if you have a larger group it can be tricky to navigate the layout. For very small weddings, though, the dramatic scenery makes it worth considering

The Sailing Center overlooking Lake Champlain is my favorite hidden gem. It’s a newer building, so not many folks think about it unless they’re into sailing. But the lake views are spectacular, and the space works perfectly for intimate ceremonies.

The Intervale Community Barn is tucked away on the Intervale surrounded by gardens and farm land. You feel like you are miles away yet minutes to downtown and easy lodging. If your dream is a barn wedding, this might just fit the list perfectly.

How Much Does a Small Wedding Cost in Burlington?

Small weddings give you incredible flexibility to maximize your budget impact. Go with a weekday or “off-season” like April-May, November, or January. You’ll have fewer people to navigate around and more options for lodging and food.Fewer guests means venue minimum spending requirements become less of a factor. Restaurant private dining rooms and boutique hotel spaces that might be cost-prohibitive for 100 guests become perfectly reasonable for 25.

Small weddings aren’t just scaled-down big weddings, they’re entirely different events with different cost structures and opportunities.

Critical Mistakes to Avoid When Choosing Your Venue

Think about ceremony flow. Is there enough room for a wide enough aisle? Make sure there’s plenty of room for this magical moment between a bride and her father, or whoever is walking you down the aisle.

While Burlington is pedestrian-friendly, parking can be tricky downtown. Ask venues about parking arrangements, or consider transportation options for your guests.

Guest comfort matters more in small weddings because every person’s experience is more noticeable. If your venue layout confuses people or creates bottlenecks, you’ll feel it immediately with a smaller group.

Smart Solutions for Burlington Wedding Logistics

Two-day celebrations solve many Burlington wedding challenges. Ceremony one day, reception the next. This approach gives you weather backup options and lets you use venues that might not work for full-day events. Plan for rain and hope for sunshine. Many Burlington venues offer both indoor and outdoor options specifically for this reason.

For guest accommodations, weekday and off-season weddings give you more lodging options at better rates. Burlington’s hotel scene can get busy during peak wedding season and university events. Consider connecting your guests with local engagement session locations if they’re arriving early Burlington offers beautiful spots for photos that can extend their Vermont experience.

Off-season benefits extend beyond cost savings. April- Early May and November weddings often feature fewer crowds at venues and more vendor availability.

Book earlier rather than later, even for small weddings. Popular intimate venues have limited dates, and their calendars fill up with both large events and multiple small celebrations.

Many couples extend small Burlington weddings into Vermont getaway weekends that give their closest family and friends a true taste of our beautiful state.

Winter weddings create cozy romance, while spring and fall provide stunning outdoor ceremony options. Each season offers different advantages for intimate Vermont celebrations.
